C’est impossible!
We just stumble upon an unsettling futuristic project that seems to have taken a page right out of George Orwell’s dystopian novel, 1984. Ironically, only one country, France, seems to have raised its voice against Worldocoin.
The Questionable Quest of Worldcoin: A New Level of Overreach?
Worldcoin is a crypto project from our tech guru Sam Altman. It isn’t your typical, run-of-the-mill blockchain start-up. Oh no, Worldcoin wants to scan your eyeballs to create what they call ‘privacy-preserving digital identities’. Preserving privacy by invading it? You can’t make this stuff up! And in return for this violation of your personal privacy, they’ll generously toss a few cryptos your way. Now isn’t that an offer you can’t refuse?
France’s Lone Stand: Where are the Other Privacy Watchdogs?
Sleeping, Perhaps!
It’s amusing, or perhaps concerning, that it’s only France’s privacy watchdog, the Commission Nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL), that seems to have its eyebrows (and not eyeballs) raised about Worldcoin’s questionable legality. What are the other privacy watchdogs doing? Are they too busy playing catch with the latest data breach ball that they forgot about the impending reality of global biometric data collection?
Of course, Worldcoin has its eyes set (pun intended) on France, and CNIL has promptly initiated investigations. Can you hear the sound of other privacy watchdogs around the world springing into action? Of course not. It’s all quiet on the western front, or rather, every front except France.
Isn’t it baffling how all this is unfolding right under our noses while we’re oblivious, engrossed in the latest Twitter feud, or tickling our brains with mindless TikTok dances?
You’d expect uproar, mass protests, and institutions taking a stand, but no. We live in a world where being digitally ‘seen’ and having our identities scrutinized by an AI is apparently the new norm, all for the price of a few cryptos.
Well, at least France is showing some resistance. Vive la France! Better to be the lone voice crying out in the wilderness than to be a silent sheep, willingly offering its eyes to the digital shepherd.
Welcome to the future. Fasten your seatbelts, or should I say, shield your eyes. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.
